The Shortstop by A.M Madden (Review written in Hebrew & English)

כילדה, תמיד חלמתי שהאהבה הראשונה שלי, תהיה גם האחרונה. כזאת שתהיה שותפה בכל התחנות במהלך החיים ושתהיה חלק בלתי נפרד ממני. כמובן שזה לא קרה.... לא הראשונה, לא השנייה ובינתיים גם לא אלה שבאו אחריה. זאת אחת הסיבות שהתאהבתי קשות בסיפור המדהים הזה. אהבה חזקה ואמיתית שמתחילה בילדות ומתבגרת יחד עם הדמויות.... קווינט ואנני הכירו לראשונה כשהיו בני 5. כבר ברגע בו הם נפגשו על הדשא אותו חלקו כשכנים, לא ניתן היה להפריד ביניהם. כילדים, כמתבגרים וכאנשים בוגרים - תמיד נשארו נאמנים אחד לשנייה ואהבו בטירוף. קווינט, שחקן בייסבול מוכשר ביותר, שכבר כילד הבטיח את עתידו בין כל הגדולים, מחליט לקיים את ההבטחה שהבטיח לאנני כשהיו ילדים ומציע לה נישואים. היא כמובן מסכימה וביחד, כמו כל דבר אחר שהם עושים, הם מסיימים את הקולג' וממשיכים לשלב הבא של חייהם. אנני, שכל חייה חלמה להיות מורה, מוותרת על חלומה ומקדישה את כל כולה לקווינט ולקריירה שלו. המזל ממשיך להאיר להם פנים כשקווינט מקבל את הצעת חייו להתחיל לשחק ב New York Yankees. הם לומדים להתמודד עם החשיפה למצלמות וההיעדרויות הרבות שלו בזמן המשחקים וגם כשקשה, הם נשארים מאוחדים לאורך כל התהליך. כל גן העדן הזה עלי אדמות הופך לגיהינום כשקווינט נפצע קשה בזמן משחק. העתיד המזהיר שציפה לו מתרחק בכל יום שעובר וקווינט הופך להיות האדם שמעולם לא הכירה. הוא משליך את כל הכאב והתסכול שלו על אנני והסובבים אותו ופתאום האהבה הגדולה והחזקה שחלקו, מתפוררת ונעלמת. הוא נופל למקומות שחורים ביותר ולא מוצא את האור. אנני מנסה בכל כוחה לא להישבר ולעמוד לצידו למרות שהוא מנסה להרחיק אותה בכל דרך אפשרית. וכשכבר הכאב חזק ממנה, היא מרימה ידיים ועוזבת. אולי בגלל שעברתי פציעה ששינתה את כל תכניות העתיד שלי, הלב שלי יצא אל קווינט. למרות שהתנהג בצורה בלתי נסבלת, מצאתי את עצמי בוכה בגללו ובשבילו. גם הקינדל שלי מצא את עצמו נזרק על הרצפה יותר מפעם אחת והכאב של השניים הרג אותי. אני מתה על הסופרת וגם הפעם היא הצליחה לסחוף אותי ולנגן על מיתרי לבי מהשנייה הראשונה. אהבה שכזאת יש רק בספרים, אפילו לא בסרטים, ואני מאחלת אותה לכולנו.

Ever since I was a little girl, I always dreamed that my first love, will be my last. The one that follows me through all the destinations in life and be integral part of it. None of it happened of course…Not the first one, not even the second and the ones after. That is why I fell madly in love with this story. True love that begins while being kids and grows up with the characters. Quint & Annie were neighbors and met for the first time at the age of 5. In that moment, meeting on their shared front yard, they become inseparable. As children, teenagers and adults, they stayed faithful and madly in love with each other. Quint, a most talented baseball player who's been a huge promise like all the major ones, decides to keep his childhood promise to Annie and asks her to be his wife. She agrees of course and like everything they'd ever do together, they graduate college and take another step to the next stage in their lives. Annie, who always dreamed about being a teacher, dedicate herself to Quint's career. Good luck still keeps coming their way as Quint gets his life offer to play for the New York Yankees. They learn to live with the publicity and being under the cameras' eyes. Even the fact that Quint's being away from home a lot, they still stays united. All this heaven on earth becomes hell when Quint injure hard while playing. The bright future that was expecting him is drifting away and he becomes a stranger to Annie. He throws at her and his surroundings all that pain and suffering that he feels and suddenly this huge strong love they'd share, starting to fall apart. He goes to dark places and can't find the light. Annie tries very hard not to break and to be there for him although he keep pushing her away and when she can't take it anymore, she give up and leave. Maybe because I had such an injury that changed my entire future, my heart ached for Quint. Although he was horrible & acted awful to Annie, I found myself crying for him. My kindle even find itself being thrown on the floor more than once and the pair's pain killed me. I love A.M Madden and again, she succeed capture me and play with my heart's strings from the second I started reading. This kind of love only exists on books, not even movies, and I wish it to all of us.
